Marvel Studios is Reportedly About to Introduce Sub-Mariner to the MCU

Posted: 28 Jan 2022 05:41 AM PST

With the X-Men waiting to be introduced in the next Doctor Strange film, we’re starting to get reports that the film may introduce Prince Namor the Sub-Mariner as well. After all, he is said to be the first mutant, having predated the X-Men who first appeared in 1963. This would tie into his having been a member of the mutant team if the studios go in that direction. This could also lead to more significant conflicts depending on how the current MCU heroes handle the mutant arrival.

Reporting from various sources suggest Black Panther will be introducing the lost city of Atlantis to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Namor (aka the Sub-Mariner) along with other characters from Atlantis bringing them in direct conflict with Wakanda.

Marvel Studios has laid the groundwork for Atlantis and Namor to appear in the MCU for years. Iron Man 2 features a S.H.I.E.L.D logo on a map over the ocean. Avengers: Endgame featured a reference to an underwater earthquake, and most recently, the event of Eternals featured the Celestial Tiamut emerging from the Indian Ocean, which likely would have caused a major disturbance to Atlantis

According to InsidetheMagic, this development could be begin in Doctor Strange’s next film.

Gargantos, a creature set to fight Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange in his upcoming sequel, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness which releases on May 6 in theaters, is a minion of the sorcerer Naga who is one of Namor's foes in the comics. Doctor Strange is also supposedly going to tease the Defenders, who had Namor as one of the original members of the team.

At the moment, Marvel Studios has been teasing several Avenger-like groups to be created such as the Young Avengers, Thunderbolts, and now the Defenders. If Namor did appear as a likely enemy towards Wakanda, it would be interesting to see Namor interacts with the rest of the world as Eternals has shown that fans don't like heroes who suddenly decide to act. Thankfully, Namor has plenty of motivation to show up due to Tiamut possibly damaging Atlantis.

It’s been rumored that Narcos: Mexico star Tenoch Huerta will be playing Namor the Sub-Mariner in the Black Panther sequel, although nothing is confirmed yet. What is known is that he’s rumored to play an unknown antagonist. If he is leading Atlantis against Wakanda, it may be a part of a longstanding rivalry between the two nations. Indeed, Atlantis and Wakanda have been at odds in the comics since 1980 with The Defenders #84. The feud took its deadliest turn in The Avengers vs. The X-Men comic series.

In that series, T’Challa would eventually lure Namor into a false peace meeting as a distraction while Wakandan forces destroyed Atlantis. With his kingdom ravaged, Namor returned home to find an envoy of Thanos waiting to demand his loyalty to the Mad Titan. With no other choice, Namor did so, but not before lying about the presence of an Infinity Stone in Wakanda, prompting Thanos to attack the already wounded country. While this conflict happened in the comics, it’s only a taste of how bad things could get if the two nations go to war. The two leaders have joined forces as well, although begrudgingly. They notably teamed to fight Doctor Doom in the Secret Wars series.

Fans probably shouldn’t expect a Namor film series, however. While Marvel has the right to introduce the character, Universal owns the solo film rights, much like they do with The Hulk. So unless a deal is struck, we may never see the popular antihero in his own film. That does not mean he won’t be a significant force as we advance, though. As the world in the MCU continues to change, there is promise that the King of Atlantis could be a prominent figure in the ever-shifting landscape.

Neil Young’s Spotify Tantrum is a Helpful Reminder to Buy Physical Media

Posted: 27 Jan 2022 01:45 PM PST

In the subscription based music and media streaming landscape, Spotify is become top-dog. I mean, does anyone even remember MOG, Rdio or Rhapsody?  Among the current crop of recognizable music streamers are Tidal, Apple Music, Pandora, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, and of course Spotify. As the most ubiquitous streaming service, Spotify offers a number of curated music discovery services, and is constantly implementing new ones. But in recent year’s, they’ve ramped up their non-music content with a push toward podcasts, most notably with Joe Rogan.

And it’s those podcasts that creating this week’s newsworthy kerfuffle between a long irrelevant rocker from the sixties, and a firebrand comedian, MMA fight commentator, and podcast host, who signed what’s been rumored to be a $200m, multiyear exclusive with Spotify. You see, while Joe Rogan has recently started questioning the politics and efficacy of the often mandated vaccines, or at least interviewing notable people who do, long-ago irrelevant rocker Neil Young is angry that anyone is listening to Joe Rogan promote what he calls “false information.”

On Monday, the legendary rocker, asked in an open letter to his management team and record label, that Spotify remove his music in response to the platform’s failure to blacklist podcaster Joe Rogan.

"I am doing this because Spotify is spreading fake information about vaccines – potentially causing death to those who believe the disinformation being spread by them," he wrote. "Please act on this immediately today and keep me informed of the time schedule. […] I want you to let Spotify know immediately TODAY that I want all my music off their platform," he continued. "They can have Rogan or Young. Not both."

In the past, Young has also demanded that Donald Trump not use his music at political rallies, and has even threatened to remove his music from Spotify before over sound quality issues, but later relented. But in today’s digital age, aging rockers like Neil Young are not nearly as relevant as a podcaster like Joe Rogan. In fact, the average number of listeners Rogan draws per episode dwarf legacy media programming like Tucker Carlson, Rachel Maddow, or CNN during primetime, so he is strategically labelled as “dangerous” for not promoting what the Critical Drinker calls “the message.”

A spokesperson for Spotify responded the next day with, “We want all the world’s music and audio content to be available to Spotify users. With that comes great responsibility in balancing both safety for listeners and freedom for creators,” they said. “We regret Neil’s decision to remove his music from Spotify, but hope to welcome him back soon.”

And just like that, anyone that had Neil Young on their Spotify playlist could no longer listen to Young’s suddenly ironically titled hit from 1989, “Rockin’ in the Free World“.

I think it’s important to note that before our digital age, a time when I can just post a link to Neil’s 30+ year old hit song, audiophiles like me had to use “physical media.” We actually had to buy our books on CD or tape, (or paper!), and movies were on VHS or DVD or BluRay. For music we had vinyl records, cassette tapes, and CDs, which we could “rip” to an MP3 for listening on our computers or iPods. But nowadays, most everyone buys their favorite media digitally, rather than “ripping” it, but with a hidden cost, and for the most part we actually don’t own it.

You see, Amazon, Netflix, Spotify, and most subscription services have the right to take that media away for any reasons (violating TOS, Copyright expired licenses, certain rights of ownership), including when an anti-freedom loving ex-hippie like Neil Young decides he doesn’t want to play his music on your service anymore. Unlike those vinyl records or CDs you can hold in your hands, Neil can make Spotify take his music from you if he likes. Not that as many people care about Neil Young as they do about Rogan these days.

Many other rockers feel similarly to Young. In fact, Bruce Springsteen, and the Foo Fighters, and even Garth Brooks are insisting on vaccine passports to come to their shows, but others are actually boycotting venues that require vaccines. Eric Clapton is one such anti-establishment rocker, and he thinks these pro-establishment rockers have all fallen victim to “mass formation psychosis,” to coin a phrase made globally popular by Dr. Robert Malone when he appeared on the Joe Rogan podcast on December 31 of last year. While the episode is one of the most listened to in Spotify’s history, and has not been removed, Youtube later removed it after pressure from pro-vaccine advocates.

Meanwhile, Malone’s theory has been discussed across the internet. And while legacy news outlets are trying to debunk Dr. Malone’s theory, guys like Clapton sees the signs of “mass hypnosis” everywhere, and in an interview this week with Harmless Dave of The Real Music Observer, he explained that those who took the vaccine had succumbed to the brainwashing.

YouTube Video

Clapton has been a staunch anti-vaxx mandate proponent ever since a frightening ordeal he experienced after taking the AstraZeneca vaccine last year, which he called "disastrous." Since then he has recorded a couple of anti-COVID-restrictions songs, along with Van Morrison, stoking the anger of faithful COVIDians like Neil Young. But Clapton's outspokenness on COVID issues has been met with a lot of criticism, but he says he spoke out anyway because his "career had almost gone anyway."

"At the point where I spoke out, it had been almost been 18 months since I'd been forcibly retired," he explained. "I joined forces with Van and I got the tip Van was standing up to the measures and I thought, 'Why is nobody else doing this?' so I contacted him. He said, 'I'm just objecting, really. But it seems like we're not even allowed to do that. And nobody else is doing it.'"

No matter where you stand on the vaccine mandates, or in the Neil Young vs Spotify vs Joe Rogan debate, physical media will still be around even after the servers go down. Might be time to head back to the used books and CDs store.

Sounds like it might be time to dust off my vinyl copy of ‘461 Ocean Boulevard’.

What to Make of the ‘Substantial’ Reshoots to Disney’s ‘Ms. Marvel’

Posted: 27 Jan 2022 10:55 AM PST

Ms. Marvel‘s director has confirmed that significant reshoots are currently underway, as ComicBook.com reports. Recently, reports abounded of how Marvel Studios was reshooting the show before its big debut this year. Filming was largely believed to be completed in 2021 until that little nugget got out, and Lizzie Hill of My Cosmic Circus said that the reshoots were “definitely substantial.”

While reshoots may scream trouble for some, they typically occur within almost any major production. Even if the series is currently suffering from significant issues, Marvel Studios and the production team still have several months to fix any issues and still make the intended premiere window.

Having concluded filming in May 2021, Ms. Marvel‘s production team has already spent a significant amount of time in post-production, which a majority of the work will be in the area of visual effects, as well as sound work, editing, and titles. Disney apologists insist the reshoots are only meant to better bring the series together, and in post, the producers may have opted to change certain story beats that don’t work as well as intended.

Perhaps Marvel and Disney are unhappy with what they’re seeing, and feel the need to fix massive problems. Or perhaps, upon cutting together episodes a subplot is less clear than they wanted. Or perhaps, there was just way too much “woke” in the series, and a wise executive is insisting they tone it down.

However, since the Disney+ series will lead into her upcoming role in the Captain Marvel sequel The Marvels, it would be tough for the studio to make any substantial alterations to her character, power set, or endpoint.  With reshoots just now getting underway, the significant work to come seemingly reinforces rumors that Ms. Marvel will air after both Moon Knight and She-Hulk, with the premiere currently set for Summer 2022 – possibly as late as September.

Fine-tuning this property has been a big priority for Marvel Studios as Ms. Marvel is one of their most popular young characters. (She’s got to be right before her big screen debut in The Marvels next year.) However, this is a sign that things are moving along as planned ahead of the Disney+ series’ 2022 release.

Peter Dinklage Whines & Disney Throws Snow White Under the Woke Bus

Posted: 27 Jan 2022 08:19 AM PST

Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage must have been provoked by the classic fairy tale Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Dinkalge recently objected to the news that Disney had planned a live-action rendition of their 1937 classic cartoon, which is being pre-emptively praised as “progressive” for casting Rachel Zegler of West Side Story as the titular Disney princess.

Dinklage revealed his hurt feelings with the Disney remake on Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast on Monday, explaining that he takes issue with how some fans have praised Disney’s decision to recruit a Latina actress while ignoring how the Snow White story presents its namesake dwarfs. Apparently, if Disney plans to go with the established caricatures of the world famous dwarfs, which depicted them as friendly, hard working, and playful, the diminutive thespian doesn’t think Disney deserves credit for being “progressive” at all.

From the podcast:

"There's a lot of hypocrisy going on," Dinklage told Maron. "Literally no offense to anyone, but I was a little taken aback by — they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White, but you're still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Take a step back and look at what you're doing there. It makes no sense to me, because you're progressive in one way and you're still making that f–king backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together, what the f–k are you doing man? Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soapbox? I guess I'm not loud enough."

Dinklage must not be TOO familiar with the original tale, because the dwarfs may have worked in a diamond mine, but lived in a quaint little cottage.

Victimhood is the new elitism apparently, but as expected, Disney quickly responded, bending over backwards to acquiesce to Dinklage’s umbrage, according to reporting by David Ng of Breitbart.

The Walt Disney Co. has jumped into damage-control mode after actor Peter Dinklage criticized the studio's planned live-action remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The actor called the project a "fucking backwards story" for its depiction of midgets who live together in a cave.

Disney responded to Dinklage's comments on Tuesday, and in so doing, threw its original 1937 animated classic under the woke bus.

"To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community," the studio said in a statement sent to multiple news outlets.

"We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period."

But as Kay Smythe of the Daily Caller points out, what does Dinklage want exactly?

Should Disney have paired race-swapping with sex swapping? Snow White and The Seven Transgender Acapella Singers? Maybe more race-swapping? Black dudes pretending to be black ladies? Snow White And The Seven Madeas? Hire Tyler Perry, it'll be a smash!

It's almost like Dinklage doesn't understand the term "hypocritical" when applied to progressive Hollywood.

What would be hypocritical and "anti-woke" is if Disney used their usual lineup of SNL box office stars and turned them into dwarves using CGI. Then we might have a Dinklage tantrum about how Hollywood took away seven of the most notable roles available for real, actual members of the dwarf community.

Hopefully Dinklage will feel better now that the biggest entertainment company in the world is responding to his loud voice. But it that isn’t enough, maybe learning that Snow White actress Rachel Zegler is clearly simpatico with him will satisfy his victimhood itch. After all, she’s one of the most easily triggered progressives in Hollywood at the moment, nearly to the point of demonstrating racism.

Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs live-action remake does not yet have an official release date. Marc Webb is directing the feature with Marc Platt producing. The script comes from Benj Pasek and Justin Paul who previously worked on the musicals La La Land and The Greatest Showman. Production is slated to start in the spring in the U.K. More casting announcements are likely to come in the near future.

As Smythe also points out, Dinklage's comments could potentially slam the door shut on the opportunity for struggling actors to play the most famous fictional dwarf characters in fantasy history. Not only has Dinklage written himself out of the most iconic role of all time, he's ostracized himself from the so-called dwarf community that he admits he does not affiliate with.

Reddit’s Censorship & Smearing of Conservative Creators Makes them Useless

Posted: 27 Jan 2022 06:15 AM PST

Reddit has a political problem. As reported by Bounding Into Comics, Critical Blast, and here at Bleeding Fool, further confirmation of what we know about Reddit, that’s led to Mike Baron’s Thin Blue Line graphic novel being banned for supposed “misinformation and racism”:

An activist moderator on the popular /r/Comics subreddit, which boasts membership of over 1.7 million readers, banned promotion of prolific comic book creator Mike Baron's new book Thin Blue Line for "misinformation and racism."

User /u/thebleedingfool shared an article from The Federalist, where Baron promoted the book while also talking about his history with comics and his views on the current state of law enforcement.

In response to the sharing of this article /r/Comics moderator SickBurnBro replied to the original posting writing, "Hello! Unfortunately, your submission has been removed for the following reason(s): Misinformation and racism."

The moderator added, "If you feel that your submission has been removed in error, please message us so we can take a look. Thanks!"

I guess somebody doesn’t like the police. When pressed for a response by “Even-Sympathy-657,” the anonymous moderator failed to make their case by quoting Baron from the Federalist article, in a weak attempt to back up their decision. It’s the final phrase in their response that’s “the tell” though.

This isn’t even the first time a Baron book experienced censorship shunning on Reddit forums. As noted almost a year earlier, they banned a campaign for crowdfunding his Florida Man graphic novel too. This is the second time I know of where some unseen leftist on Reddit censored citation of a Baron story, and it indicates something is terribly wrong. Especially if no other creators in the industry are willing to come to his defense.

What good is a site like Reddit, really, if this kind of activist employment is allowed unquestioned by the main staff? Thank goodness I don’t have an account on their site to date. All they’re doing is proving another example of what happens when leftists increasingly deal in blacklisting.

Batgirl Snags “First Trans Actor in a DC Comics Film” Participation Trophy

Posted: 27 Jan 2022 04:45 AM PST

HBO Max’s Batgirl has cast, Ivory Aquino to play Alysia Yeoh, Barbara Gordon’s best friend and roommate. While word of Aquino’s casting had leaked earlier this month due to a set photo, the news has finally been confirmed.  Because both Aquino and her character Yeoh are both transgender, Warner Bros. was very proud to announce that this makes Batgirl the “first live-action film based on a DC Comics character to include an openly trans character”.

Alysia first appeared on the printed page in DC Comics’ Batgirl in 2011, created by writer Gail Simone and penciler Ardian Syaf. How long before Simone virtue signals with a humble bragging pat herself on the back for this character?

As Breitbart points out, this is a thin nuance because they already had a trans actor in their Supergirl TV series on The CW, trans actor Nicole Maines was the comic book giant's first onscreen trans character Dreamer back in 2018. So this really feels like an effort to tick an “inclusion” checkbox.

Is that gonna sell more HBO Max subs? Or is the marketing department out of ideas at this point?
