Van Damme to Bring His Film History Together in Final Action Film

Posted: 18 Feb 2022 08:15 AM PST

Jean-Claude Van Damme is one of the most well-known names in the world of action movies. After appearing in a variety of uncredited or lesser roles between 1979 and 1984, Van Damme starred as the primary villain in No Retreat, No Surrender in 1986, and then in Bloodsport two years later. Now, 36 years later, at the age of 61, Van Damme will star in What’s My Name?, which is being billed as the penultimate action film of his career.

The title is drawn from the notion that Van Damme will star as himself, an older action movie actor who, after being in a near deadly car accident, wakes up from a coma with no memory of who he is. Van Damme will be battling many of the most memorable villains from his career as he attempts to regain his identity, leading to one final face-off.

Speaking to Deadline, Van Damme said that the movie will pull from his cinematic and personal life just like 2008's JCVD

"I wanted to leave the stage but with a revisit of my career, starting with Bloodsport, the one where I started to become famous. I want this to be a new Bloodsport but on a higher level. In the film, I am on my way down in terms of career, and as I come out of a premiere of another action movie, I am not happy because I've been living in hotels the past 30 years, which is actually true. We're going to bring real elements from my real life and what happened to me. I came from Belgium, all the way to Hollywood. I succeeded, I failed, I came back. So I'm walking out on the street after the premiere, and boom! — a car hits me because I'm drunk. When I wake up from the impact, I don't know what's my name, and no one recognizes me."

Van Damme has faced off against  various action stars like Dolph Lundgren and Tong Po, and also appeared in The Expendables 2 alongside Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Chuck Norris, Jet Li, and others. It is uncertain how many of these stars will appear in his action swan song, but with the star pledging to square off against a number of past rivals, this could be a lot of fun for Van Damme fans everywhere to relive some of his career’s most memorable fights.

Jeremy Zag, the director, stated:

"He's trapped in this catch-22 where his heart is his only guide and that road will lead him through a journey that includes a lot of fights, in what will be a real action mainstream movie where we treat JC as a real human superhero. I grew up watching JC and want new audiences to do the same thing, and when he stands against Tong Po, he'll begin to flashback in his mind, and we will reproduce some of the best fights from some of his biggest movies."

Once this production wraps, Van Damme plans to relax and enjoy his life with his family, “because life goes by fast.”

Scott Derrickson Praises Sam Raimi After Seeing Doctor Strange 2 Trailer

Posted: 18 Feb 2022 06:15 AM PST

Doctor Strange, directed by Scott Derrickson in 2016, introduced Benedict Cumberbatch as the Master of the Mystic Arts to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Many people were surprised to learn that Marvel was considering Scott Derrickson, best known for horror films like Sinister and The Exorcism of Emily Rose, to direct Doctor Strange. However, after multiple pitch meetings, Derrickson persuaded the studio that he was the ideal person for the job and was eventually hired to helm the film. Doctor Strange was also co-written by Derrickson, and his distinct vision was one of the reasons for the film’s popularity.

Derrickson quickly agreed to return for the sequel, and Kevin Feige described it as “legitimately disturbing” but not quite a real horror film. But soon afterward, Marvel and Derrickson had creative disagreements, which led to the director’s departure from the project.

Apparently, Scott is still on excellent terms with the studio and will serve as an executive producer on Doctor Strange 2. Sam Raimi, the director of Spider-Man and Evil Dead, was eventually brought on board to direct Doctor Strange 2, with Loki writer Michael Waldron creating a new screenplay. The first full-length trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was recently released by Marvel, and it is currently trending globally. The teaser is a blast, with loads of shocks and even confirms Sir Patrick Stewart’s return as Professor X.

Scott Derrickson, like everyone else, is thrilled for Doctor Strange 2 and expressed his thoughts on Twitter when asked what he thought of the new teaser.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is arguably the most anticipated movie of 2022, with rumors of Iron Man, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, and even Ghost Rider's involvement swirling all over the Internet. Doctor Strange 2 stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular superhero, with Benedict Wong, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Rachel McAdams reprising their roles from the first film. Elizabeth Olsen and Tom Hiddleston also star in the film, along with Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters on May 6, 2022.

Does Patrick Stewart Portray Professor X in Doctor Strange 2?

Posted: 18 Feb 2022 04:45 AM PST

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness saw its first complete trailer during last weekend’s Super Bowl LVI between the Los Angeles Rams and the Cincinnati Bengals, and there is a lot to unpack.

What caught many Marvel movie fans was hearing the voice of Sir Patrick Stewart’s Professor Charles Xavier in the trailer. Is this the sign that the X-Men are finally making their way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe? An appearance by Professor X would be the first significant X-Men figure to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Of course it wouldn’t be the same Professor X whose body was blown up and his brain leaped into a brain-dead comatose man in X-Men: Days of Future Past, or the Charles Xavier who was assassinated by X-24 and buried in an unmarked grave in Logan. It’s unlikely to be the Charles Xavier from FX’s Legion, who fought and destroyed Amahl Farouk on the Astral Plane.

A third-season flashback episode of Legion revealed Xavier as a British soldier during World War II. After the war, the young Xavier was sent to a mental health facility, where he met his ex-wife and David Haller’s mother, a Holocaust survivor. In Legion, when David Haller travels back in time, Xavier is informed of Farouk’s threat, and instead of fighting, he works with a future Farouk to persuade David and the past Farouk to make peace and accept a different timeline.

What does this signify for Stewart’s Professor X? Is he a member of the Illuminati from the comics who made their first appearance in New Avengers #7 in 2005? The history of that secretive group was explored in a New Avengers: Illuminati special, written by Brian Michael Bendis (May 2006). The covert group is comprised of some of Marvel Comics’ most intelligent and powerful minds, including Namor the Sub-Mariner, King T’Challa of Wakanda, Tony Stark, Reed Richards, Black Bolt, and, of course, Doctor Stephen Strange.

Rumors have long circulated about the introduction of both Namor and Reed Richards into the MCU, and the Illuminati could provide an avenue for just that… though it’s possible that the Stark in question could be a variant version (rumored  to be played by Tom Cruise), raising the possibility that the casting we see for the Illuminati members in Multiverse of Madness may not be the same actors who appear in subsequent MCU appearances.

Beavis & Butt-Head Moving to Paramount+ Along With South Park

Posted: 17 Feb 2022 03:30 PM PST

South Park and Beavis and Butt-Head have a new home.

THR reports that South Park, which will continue to air new episodes on Comedy Central, will see its vast library make the move from HBO Max to Paramount+ in 2025. Internationally, the long-running animated comedy will be available on Paramount+ next year. New episodes will launch on the streamer in the U.S. and globally starting with season 27 in 2024.

Beavis and Butt-Head, meanwhile, will return with new episodes this year and forgo its debut on Comedy Central in favor of Paramount+. Comedy Central announced in mid-2020 that it was reviving the Mike Judge and Greg Daniels comedy for two new seasons (and spinoffs). The new episodes will now skip linear TV entirely and debut on Paramount+ at a date to be determined this year. The series will join the new movie, Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe, on Paramount+ this year. Both the show and the movie join the library of more than 200 episodes of the original comedy about the two rocking slackers on the ViacomCBS-backed streamer.

As for South Park, Paramount+ has leaned hard on the Trey Parker and Matt Stone franchise with the creation of multiple made-for-streaming movies. Two South Park movies debuted on the streamer last year with the full library of more than 310 episodes available on the platform to international viewers. Parker and Stone recently inked a rich new deal with ViacomCBS that included 14 made-for-streaming movies and a renewal that takes the flagship series through its 30th season.

As expected, the full South Park library will become available to U.S. subscribers starting in 2025, when the current domestic streaming deal with WarnerMedia's HBO Max expires. That pact, signed back in late 2019, was valued at north of $500 million. At the time, the agreement was part of a Viacom strategy to expose the company's biggest IP on other platforms — HBO Max, which has Friends and Big Bang Theory, was selected because it was a home for popular comedies. With Viacom and CBS having re-merged, the former CBS All Access was rebranded to focus on all of the conglomerate's biggest brands, from Comedy Central and MTV to BET and Nickelodeon. And with the service's expansion, the show returns home to a platform that has already carved out an audience for South Park, thanks in part to the streaming movies.
