| Our Flag Means Death Premiere Episodes On HBO Max Introduces Taika Waititi’s New Show Posted: 24 Feb 2022 03:00 AM PST Taika Waititi's new show is a subversion of the massively successful Pirates franchise from a certain Mouse House studios. Although, are 'pirate movies' a sub-genre of movies and television? I mean, we've got Black Sails, Master & Commander, and obviously the Pirates of the Caribbean movies from Disney. But are there enough of them to be a sub-genre? Well, regardless, Taika Waititi has gone and skipped ahead to make a parody and subverted that potential genre. Our Flag Means Death on HBO Max is a hilarious new show with Waititi's brand of humour that sees pirates in an entirely new light. It's a pirate-comedy, which is something I just coined right now and we're going to go with it. Read on for more details on this new HBO Max original series in our review of the Our Flag Means Death premiere episode. Taika Waititi's New Show Is Unexpectedly Hilarious![]() Image via HBO Max. Our Flag Means Death on HBO max is all about Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) a wealthy landowner from the 1700s, who decides to become a pirate. All the while having absolutely no experience, being grossly underqualified and not posessing any of the traits needed for piracy. Why Bonnet decides to go down this route is unclear, but regardless, it's a hilarious premise. Bonnet decides to bring a cordial and polite approach to an industry where murdering and ravaging is the norm. That idea of mashing up these two contrasting worlds is where most of the comedy comes from. Waititi is also seemingly everywhere. This new series is only happening after production on Waititi's next Marvel project, Thor: Love & Thunder wrapped. Love & Thunder will see the return of Natalie Portman to the Thor franchise, reportedly as Lady Thor. It's the first movie in the MCU, post-Avengers: Endgame featuring one of the MCU's founding heroes. So all eyes are on Waititi to see how he handles where Thor and the characters from the franchise are now in this post-snap world. Waititi was also involved in the recent hit series Reservation Dogs. His Star Wars movie is still reportedly coming, although we have no details on who and what kind of story it will feature. And on top of it all, the acclaimed Oscar-nominated director is also involved in genre projects like Flash Gordon and the live-action Akira. The man could be one of the busiest creators in Hollywood right now. Premiere Episode Introduces The Show's Premise![]() Image via HBO Max. The Our Flag Means Death premiere episode kick starts with a tour of the ship. Bonnet brags about his gentlemanly approach to piracy. Paying his crew steady wages, introducing an indoor tennis court in the bowels of the ship, a jam room for musical creative expression and a fully stocked library. All things too ridiculous to be on a pirate ship. So of course, the crew doesn't respect him at all and plans a mutiny. Even though that means they'll never find out the ending of Pinocchio, something Bonnet reads to them during bedtime every night. He even does the voices. It's a comedy that shouldn't work because it feels too silly. But it works wonderfully given the unique setting of a pirate ship with a dastardly crew who are distracted with the task of creating their ship flag. The Our Flag Means Death premiere episode mostly deals with how Bonnet has to earn the respect of his crew. At least, for the time being. Our Flag Means Death On HBO Max Is A True Story![]() Image via HBO Max. Believe it or not, while the above premise seems silly, it's based on a totally true story. Stede Bonnet was a real man from the early 18th Century, who really left behind his comfortable life to become a pirate. Not only that, but he even tangled with, fought against, and eventually teamed up with the infamous pirate Blackbeard. And for the version of events portrayed in Taika Waititi's new show, Waititi himself is playing Blackbeard. While the premiere episode of Our Flag Means Death doesn't have a lot of the guest appearances the trailer teased, the cast shown so far, and their importance to the story is pretty funny. Playing the submissive minstrel is Joel Fry of Cruella fame. Ewan Bremmer from Wonder Woman and Trainspotting plays buttons, Stede's confidante with a thick Scottish accent that's hard to understand without subtitles. The later episodes will include appearances by Fred Armisen, Leslie Jones and Waititi himself, as mentioned earlier. Our Flag Means Death Premiere Episode Review![]() Image via HBO Max. The premiere episode of Our Flag Means Death features the typical comedy from Darby and Waititi that we've seen before in What We Do In The Shadows. Well thought out, dry and sarcastic humour, mixed in with some bumbling physical comedy. Darby sells it as a polished and preppy gentleman somehow trying to lead a group of murderers and pillagers. It's unexpectedly funny. But on top of all that, the jokes really have fun with the usual depictions of pirates. It's the same type of humour when they take supposedly tough guys and put them in everyday mundane situations. Seeing burly and sour-faced men trying to channel their creativity to stitch an intimidating pirate flag is all the right kinds of comedy. And in many ways, Our Flag Means Death is almost a workplace comedy taking place on a pirate ship with a new manager whose way of doing things is upsetting the status quo. Oh, and mutiny is seemingly a constant thought on everyone's mind as a result. Our Flag Means Death premiere episode debuts on HBO Max on March 3, 2022.Are you down for yet another new potential franchise from Taika Waititi? Especially one that is a Pirate comedy? Let me know in the comments below. Featured image via HBO Max. Our Flag Means Death Premiere Episodes On HBO Max Introduces Taika Waititi’s New Show |
| Bethesda Games On Steam – The Bethesda.net Launcher Is Shutting Down Posted: 23 Feb 2022 09:44 PM PST Bethesda announced that there will soon be a change to how PC players play their games. Right now, you can launch games from the publisher and developer through Bethesda.net. Soon, that space will come to a close and all games launched from this platform will head to a new space. It’s not surprising given that Microsoft acquired Bethesda last year. The move to Steam and Bethesda.net shutting down means you’ll need to find ways to transfer and play your Bethesda games on Steam. Here’s the best way to make the process as smooth as possible. Bethesda.net is Closing to Make Way for Bethesda Games on Steam![]() Image Credit: Bethesda Bethesda announced in a blog today that they will be shutting down Bethesda.net and encouraging players to transfer Bethesda games on this launcher to Steam. Also, they’ll be offering help as the launcher comes to an end this year. If you don’t play games through the Bethesda.net launcher, then you’re all clear. You don’t need to worry about anything happening to your games. That said, Fallout 76 users on PC are likely using the launcher and will need to make a plan for the big move over to a new space. Additionally, you won’t lose your games if you use the Bethesda.net launcher. The migration to Steam will include your game library and Wallet – meaning you will not lose anything from your Bethesda.net account. Many games using the old launcher will even transfer saves automatically. For a select few yet to be announced, you’ll still need to transfer saves manually. The Bethesda.net login might still be needed for some games as well, according to the company. If I was a betting man, then I’d say that’s likely a reference to Fallout 76. I think this was bound to happen sooner than later. The concern many hold is that they don’t want to lose their games. Luckily, that doesn’t look like it’ll be a problem. How to Get Your Games Transferred and Avoid Losing Them![]() Image Credit: Bethesda Players will continue to have access to the Bethesda.net Launcher until May. Also, you can play your games from here as well. That said, when the launcher ends, you’ll need to transfer your titles to Steam. Bethesda will rollout a migration process shortly. If you have games you play through the Bethesda launcher, then you’ll follow instructions to move them to Steam. We don’t have that link or list yet, but when it releases, we’ll share with our readers! Virtual currency balances and game add-ons such as DLC and in-game skins will automatically transfer. Likewise, your Bethesda.net Wallet will transfer seamlessly to Steam. Bethesda notes you can’t transfer these games to consoles like the Xbox or PlayStation ecosystems. As of now, Bethesda will also only allow migration to Steam. That’s not great news if you’ve come to love other PC game launchers. All in all, this is a move many saw coming. Hopefully, this won’t be a process that causes you too much stress. Also, this is likely a sign of things to come for Bethesda. While the company plans to run independently underneath the Microsoft umbrella, the acquisition will have consequences. Overall, shutting down the Bethesda.net launcher and forcing a transfer of Bethesda games to Steam isn’t a Microsoft decision. This was coming for a long time, and many will hopefully find it to be helpful to their library management of PC games. | Miyazaki Graphic Novel Gets US Release This November Posted: 23 Feb 2022 06:38 PM PST I had recently written about the opening of Ghibli Park on November 1 and now there’s even more exciting news for Hayao Miyazaki fans this November: a Hayao Miyazaki graphic novel gets a US release! Read on for more information about Shuna’s Journey, a graphic novel which Miyazaki said was inspired by a Tibetan folktale known as “The Prince Who Became A Dog.” The graphic novel was adapted into a radio drama, but Hayao Miyazaki never brought Shuna’s Journey to his beloved Studio Ghibli for adaptation as an anime. Still, this iconic story from one of our favorite storytellers is going to be available in English for US readers. What Do We Know About the Miyazaki Graphic Novel US Release?![]() Image via Tokuma Shoten Hayao Miyazaki’s graphic novel, Shuna no Tabi (The Journey of Shuna), was first published in Japanese and was released in 1983. It was one-volume and contained watercolor-illustrations. The story follows Prince Shuna as he attempts to find a solution to his kingdom's barren lands. As he sets off, he meets a captive girl named Thea. After rescuing her and making enemies of her captors, he attempts to continue his journey west, hoping to find the golden grain that will bring prosperity to his people. American publisher Macmillan is going to publish the graphic novel under their graphic novel imprint, First Second, and will release it on for the first time in the US on November 1. Translator Alex Dudok de Wit tweeted the English cover and title (Shuna’s Journey) and talked a little bit more about the graphic novel, calling it more of an emonogatari (illustrated story) rather than a manga. Emonogatari were a mixed genre of picture narrative in Japanese youth magazines that were popular in the 1940s and 1950s. See the tweets below:
The graphic novel sounds absolutely gorgeous and the fact that it prefigured Princess Mononoke and Tales From the Earthsea already tells us that it’s going to be visually stunning. In a message to ABC News, Mark Siegel, editorial and creative director of First Second, said:
Miyazaki is one of the most beloved animator filmmakers of our time. His films have delighted audiences for almost 40 years and critics praise his films for their message of environmentalism, love, and friendship. They also tend to touch on difficult topics (war, disease, dying) in a gentle and heartfelt way. He recently announced he was coming out of retirement last year to make one more movie based on his favorite childhood book titled How Do You Live? His other films include My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and the 2001 release Spirited Away, which won the Academy Award for best animated feature. He was nominated for a best animated feature Oscar for his 2013 film The Wind Rises. The full list of Miyazaki films includes the following and are all available to watch on HBO Max. The documentary about Miyazaki, titled Never-Ending Man, is also available to watch on the streaming platform:
Shuna’s Journey will be released from First Second on November 1, 2022.What do you think of this Miyazaki graphic novel getting a US release? Are you as excited as I am to finally get to read it? Let us know in the comments below! Miyazaki Graphic Novel Gets US Release This November |
| Wheel of Time Cast Gary Beadle As Wolfbrother Elyas Machera For Season 2 Posted: 23 Feb 2022 01:26 PM PST The Wheel of Time has cast British actor Gary Beadle to play the character of Elyas Machera for season 2 of the Amazon Prime series. This character is a mentor to Perrin Aybara (Marcus Rutherford). And he is a man with secrets of his own. Although the character appears in the first book of the series – The Eye of the World – he was conspicuously absent from the first season of the show. A fan-favorite, Elyas has the same connection to wolves that Perrin does. He is the one who teaches Perrin how to use this ability and warns him of its dangers. That’s why he’s earned the nickname “Wolfbrother,” in the stories and the hearts of fans of Robert Jordan’s fantasy epic. Gary Beadle Cast as “Wolfbrother” Elyas Machera![]() Image via Trieste Science Fiction Festival Casting rumors are always abundant when it comes to The Wheel of Time. There are so many characters in the books that fans are constantly searching for news about who might play their favorites. One sharp-eyed fan noticed an interesting interaction on Twitter between Beadle and actor Arnas Fedaravičius – who will play the character of Masema in The Wheel of Time. The wolf emojis in the tweet led to speculation that Beadle might be playing Elyas – a character closely associated with wolves. And a closer look at the actor’s CV seems to confirm that he will bring this role to life in season 2 of The Wheel of Time.
Gary Beadle is a British actor with a long list of acting credits dating back to the 1980’s. He spent several years appearing in the British soap opera EastEnders, which is where most people recognize him from. He has a few genre credits to his name including a role in the Doctor Who spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures. Beadle recently appeared in Small Axe on Amazon Prime as well. Gary Beadle will join the cast of The Wheel of Time in season 2 in a pivotal role. He will largely interact with Perrin Aybara, but there may be some Whitecloak encounters in his future as well. Season 2 of Wheel of Time Will Bring in More Characters from the First Book![]() Image via Gary Beadle’s Instagram A veteran actor with years of experience, Beadle will certainly bring the necessary gravitas to the role of Elyas Machera. The character is a former Warder who was born in Tear (the same place Siuan Sanche hails from). When Elyas discovered his connection to the wolves, he was viewed with suspicion by the Aes Sedai. Considering Moiraine’s alarm upon learning about Perrin’s connection with wolves, it is clear that this is an uncommon ability that the Aes Sedai have little experience with. Some Aes Sedai believe this power comes from The Dark One, and treat any ‘Wolfbrother’ as they would a man who can channel. Gary Beadle is one of several new cast members set to appear in season 2 of The Wheel of Time. He joins young actress Ceara Coveney who will play Elayne Trakand – the Daughter-Heir of Andor. Elayne is another character who appears in the first book of the series. But her character had to shift to to a second season storyline due to storytelling constraints. There have also been other actors cast whose roles remain officially unknown. This includes actresses Natasha O’Keefe, Salle Salée, Meera Syal, Laura Crowhurst, and Natasha Jayahendry. It is likely that these women will portray Aes Sedai in season 2 of The Wheel of Time. But it remains to be seen how large any of these roles will be. Filming For Season 2 of Wheel of Time Is Already Underway So Gary Beadle Was Cast Some Time Ago![]() Image via Amazon Prime Video. Filming for season 2 of The Wheel of Time kicked off back in July in Prague. The epic fantasy series saw renewal for a second season ahead of the show’s premiere. Reports indicate that the series has also been renewed for a third season, as Amazon doubles down on their commitment to epic fantasy shows. All of the series regulars will return for season 2 of The Wheel of Time with one notable exception. Actor Barney Harris who played a core character in Mat Cauthon for season 1 will not be returning for another season. Irish actor Dónal Finn will portray the character instead for season 2. However the main cast of Rosamund Pike; Daniel Henney, Josha Stradowski, Madeleine Madden, Zoë Robins, Marcus Rutherford, and Hammed Animashaun will all be returning for seasons 2 and 3. We look forward to seeing Gary Beadle join The Wheel of Time cast in season 2 to bring Elyas Machera to life at last. ![]() Image via Amazon Prime The Wheel of Time season 1 is on Amazon Prime and you can find the books from your preferred retailer. We will definitely be keeping an eye out for casting news relating to upcoming seasons of The Wheel of Time. | No Way Home Blu-ray Release & Digital Date – Plus Spider-Man Meme In Live-Action Posted: 23 Feb 2022 09:45 AM PST The Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures hit Spider-Man: No Way Home is still playing in theaters, but we finally have a release date for the Blu-ray and digital. Also, Sony gave us the Spider-Man pointing meme in live-action with all the Spidey actors. Now, in its ninth week of theatrical release, the Box Office for Spider-Man: No Way Home just keeps growing. Yet, there are other movies coming out, specifically Matt Reeves' The Batman that might actually cut into the audience wanting superhero fun at the theater. Sure, The Uncharted box office – also starring one Tom Holland – is doing well, but even it didn't stop Spidey from making another almost $10 million over Presidents' Day weekend. Still, we knew that the Blu-ray and digital home release date for Spider-Man: No Way Home was coming. And to announce this, Sony Pictures gave us a live-action version of everyone's favorite Spider-Man meme. In the image released by Sony, we see Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire standing in a circle pointing at each other. The meme's origin comes from the first Spidey cartoon, where the real Spider-Man was pointing at an imposter. Yet, as soon as the rumors of Garfield's and Maguire's return broke, internet-savvy fans created a new version featuring the cinematic wall-crawlers right away. ![]() Image via Sony Pictures and @RodTitor on Twitter We don't know when the movie is leaving theaters. In fact, you might be able to drive out to the theater, watch No Way Home, and then stop at a store on the way home to pick up the Blu-ray. This movie was a sensation 20 years in the making, and a cinematic achievement not likely to be seen again. (At least, until Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, maybe, and especially if it means Chris Evans’ return to the MCU.) The Spider-Man: No Way Home Blu-ray and Digital Release DateWhen your humble correspondent was a kid, it would often take more than a year for a movie to come to home video. (Yes, video, kids. Ask your parents about the VHS v Betamax war of the 1980s.) Yet, especially with the pandemic, the window between when you could watch a movie in theaters and at home narrowed drastically. In fact, Spider-Man: No Way Home was probably supposed to be out of theaters by now. Only given its massive success as Sony's highest-ever grossing movie, executives smartly kept it playing as long as people kept showing up. It helps that not only is this movie a wellspring of warm nostalgia, but it also tells a powerful and moving Spider-Man story. Rather than flee from earlier interpretations of the character, Marvel Studios decided to embrace ALL of them. Now that we have a release date for the digital and Blu-ray versions of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the second wave begins. We suspect that this release will also earn remarkably well. Not to belabor the point, but this movie is really good. Even if it weren't so well done, folks would likely snatch this up to complete their collections. Because No Way Home is not just a Marvel Studios movie. It's a movie connected to the previous two iterations of Spidey. Also, all of the other Marvel films are available on Disney+ (except The Incredible Hulk, thanks Universal) but Spider-Man. So, those trying to do a complete MCU rewatch will need at least the digital copy to stream. You can see Spider-Man: No Way Home and how they recreate the meme in live-action in theaters or at home starting March 22, 2022.What do you think? Are you hyped for the No Way Home Blu-ray and Digital release date? Are you scooping up this movie for your collection? Also, how cute is that live-action version of the Spider-Man pointing meme? | Call Of Duty 2023 Isn’t Happening, Series Taking Year Off Posted: 23 Feb 2022 06:22 AM PST For now, Activision Blizzard is still calling the shots when it comes to its games. Soon, the Microsoft acquisition might change the pecking order in the organization. That said, there's a good chance Activision is still in the driver's seat even once the acquisition takes place. Before the deal kicks in, the studio seems eager to make positive changes. From the leadership and culture changes coming to Activision Blizzard to rethinking the rollout for their top titles, the company seems ready to make major shifts in the way things are done. A big one includes a new approach to their blockbuster Call of Duty series. Call of Duty 2023, an unnamed title in the series, will delay its release to 2024 taking a year off to address franchise concerns. Here's what we know so far. Why Call of Duty 2023 Will Get Pushed Back a Year![]() Image Credit: Activision Activision Blizzard will take a year off and delay the release of Call of Duty 2023 one year – a first for the series in nearly two decades. Bloomberg reports that those familiar with the plan say that a number of factors went into the decision. Overall, the series saw disappointing sales for its latest release, Call of Duty: Vanguard. Also, executives believe that the games releasing the way they do now is too rapid for fans. A Call of Duty game has released every year for nearly two decades. That's in part to the multi-studio rotation in place to develop the games. Activision plans to release other projects, which means 2023 won't just be a dead year. Additionally, the planned release of a Call of Duty game for 2022 is still happening. Likewise, there will be a new free-to-play title in the franchise. The next game up for release is coming from developer Treyarch. The first rumblings of developer sentiments about this decision was relief, according to the Bloomberg report. I would imagine that fans feel the same way. While I enjoyed Vanguard, I haven't touched it much since the first few months of its release. Interestingly enough, one of the factors that didn't come into play was Microsoft acquiring Activision Blizzard earlier this year. While many assumed the Xbox team might encourage making Call of Duty a less frequently released franchise, the acquisition reportedly had nothing to do with the deal. This isn't a decision coming from Phil Spencer or anyone at Microsoft – at least not officially. My guess would be that sales dictated the decision and Spencer and Co. agreed it was a good move. The franchise needs this for a few different reasons. A Historic but Necessarily Delay for the Series![]() Image Credit: Activision The Call of Duty franchise has moved over 400 million units in sales since 2003. The impact and influence of the series has also been unparalleled in the games industry. While mainline titles of the series haven't made as much of a splash lately, one element of the franchise is succeeding quite well. Call of Duty: Warzone, the battle royale, free-to-play game for consoles and PC is a huge hit. To this day, hundreds of thousands play every single day. It's a great bit of success underneath some of the less attractive stats and figures connected to Call of Duty. While Warzone succeeding is great, and it drives great revenue, the money poured into the mainline games needs to return substantial profits. Also, they would ideally be memorable experiences that drive the franchise forward. I can't say that's true of any of the last 3 or 4 Call of Duty games. Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed franchise experienced a similar effect by releasing games annually. When they took a year off in-between releases, a few things happened. Firstly, fans felt excited again to see the series return. Also, the development team had more time to fine-tune the experience and expand the game's offerings. These things lead to great games and eliminate the presence of franchise fatigue or repetitiveness. Activision Blizzard pushing Call of Duty 2023 back a year with a delay is likely a great move for the series. If you think this move is smart, then let us know in the comments! Authors like Neil Gaiman and Margaret Atwood will contribute stories inspired by songs from the album. Neil Gaiman is a long-time friend of Tori Amos, so this is an ideal collaboration for the two of them. This is not the first time that Tori has dabbled in the medium. Little Earthquakes: The Graphic Novel is technically a sequel to Comic Book Tattoo which Tori Amos put out in 2008, and we’re excited for it and new stories from Gaiman and Margaret Atwood. Little Earthquakes Gets The Graphic Novel Treatment![]() Image via Z2 Comics Little Earthquakes: The Graphic Novel will consist of 24 stories inspired by songs from the titular album. Neil Gaiman will write a story based on the song “Tear in My Hand” – which actually references the author and his Sandman comics with the line “If you need me, me and Neil will be hanging out with the Dream King.” Margaret Atwood will write a piece inspired by the famous Tori Amos (feminist) anthem “Silent All These Years.”
Other contributors and artists for Little Earthquakes: The Graphic Novel include Bilquis Evely (The Dreaming); David Mack (Kabuki), Leah Moore, Colleen Doran, Derek McCulloch, Lar deSouza, Annie Zaleski, Marc Andreyko, Cat Mihos, Neil Kleid, and Alison Sampson. A Follow-Up To 2008’s Comic Book Tattoo![]() Image via Z2 Comics The graphic novel will be assembled by Rantz Hosley, who previously worked with Tori Amos on Comic Book Tattoo. Hosley tells a fun story about giving Neil Gaiman an early demo of Little Earthquakes at Comic-Con years ago. This led to the long friendship between Neil Gaiman and Tori Amos. The inclusion of Margaret Atwood is also great news and is the first collaboration between The Handmaid’s Tale author and Tori Amos.
Tori Amos has been a musical icon since the 1980’s. And she has recorded several fantastical concept albums like Strange Little Girls and Night of Hunters. The most recent release from the singer was 2021’s Ocean to Ocean, an environmentally conscious record written during quarantine. Tori’s album art has always been a core part of her musical concept. She has such a keen eye for visual art, and renowned storytelling abilities. It will be delightful to see how these songs are brought to life on the page in a visual medium.
