New Batman Creative Team – Jorge Jiménez & Daredevil’s Chip Zdarsky

Posted: 24 Feb 2022 11:05 PM PST

It must be good to be Zdarsky right now. His run on Daredevil is about to start anew after the events of Devil's Reign, the series that has Kingpin running for President. And it's been a great run so far. Daredevil is one of the two greatest street-level, Noir-inspired characters ever made, second only to Batman. Well, as DC Comics recently announced, Chip Zdarsky will be part of the new Batman creative team, along with artist Jorge Jiménez. Is that even allowed? Will Zdarsky have to give up the Devil for the Bat? And what are his plans for Batman when he and Jiménez take over with issue #125? If his work on Daredevil is any indication, Batman is in for some hard(er) times.

What Does the New Batman Creative Team of Jorge Jiménez and Chip Zdarsky Plan for Bruce Wayne?

When Zdarsky took over Daredevil, Matt Murdock was recovering from being hit by a truck while saving a kid. Cliché, maybe, but it's very similar to the incident that blinded Murdock when he was a kid. That was Charles Soule's way of signing off the title. When Zdarsky took over, he took Murdock to one of his darkest eras. Trying to get back into the hero business too early, Daredevil accidentally killed a man. Things just got more complicated from there. This is how Zdarsky steered the creative team for Daredevil, but it also tells us how he'll approach his new Batman responsibilities.

And the creative team of Zdarsky and Jimenez are introducing a new Batman villain, one that might make Joker look like a reasonably minor threat: Failsafe. Let's look at this like an SAT question.

Failsafe is to Batman as ______ is to Superman.

A. Mister Mxyzptlk
B. Bizarro
C. Mongul
D. Doomsday

Answer: the worst possible scenario. D, for Doomsday. "When DC approached me to write Batman, I immediately thought about things that could really challenge the character mentally, physically, and in terms of his relationships," Zdarsky told ComicBook.com. "Failsafe is his Doomsday. When I started mapping out the story I got really excited about where it could take the title."

Now That Chip Zdarsky is Part of the New Batman Creative Team, What Happens to Daredevil?

As a fan of Zdarsky's work on Daredevil, I had mixed feelings about the announcement of the new Batman creative team. For a comic book writer, getting Batman is like…getting Batman. There isn't really a higher honor than that. It's one of those "can't say no" scenarios. But thankfully, Zdarsky is a free agent and can write for both companies. However, as he said on his Substack:

“And also, for anyone asking, yes I'm staying on Daredevil! I love that book and Marco [Checcetto] and I are in a pretty grand home stretch right now. But, hey, maybe Marvel will fire me? Maybe they know that a writer doing both Daredevil and Batman at the same time could open up a ‘gritty-ninjaesque-white-dude-with-stubble-and-tragedy-on-a-gargoyle-in-the-rain’ wormhole in the space-time continuum and destroy all of reality? We'll see! At least we know who is first in line for a Batman/Daredevil crossover now. Suck on that, Bendis!!!”

So, there you have it. Daredevil is in…well, not safe hands as Zdarsky put him through the wringer a few hundred times, but in a good writer's hand. And we can look forward to his run on Batman too, and whatever horrors the new creative team will put him through.

Batman #125, "Failsafe" Part One, will be in stores and available digitally on July 5th, 2022.

He is already part of the Daredevil creative team, and now he has a new gig on Batman…I congratulate you, Chip, but I am high-key envious of you too.

Andrew Garfield In Morbius – How It Could Lead To Amazing Spider-Man 3

Posted: 24 Feb 2022 06:07 PM PST

There is a lot about the Spider-Man: No Way Home movie that warms the hearts of all fans of the friendly neighborhood web-head. Yet, one of the most heartwarming moments in the film is the slight "redemption arc" of the second Spidey to hit the big screen. The response to this from the fans may explain why Morbius was delayed so much. There is reason to suspect that Andrew Garfield may be in Morbius briefly, and how this film could set up The Amazing Spider-Man 3. Some leaks and rumors purveyors have hinted at this possibility, and it makes a lot of sense, especially since Sony is trying to have their Spider-Verse and be in the MCU, too.

Why Andrew Garfield Might Be In Morbius (And Not Tobey Maguire)

Of all the Comic Book Movies coming out in 2022, it's amazing that Morbius seems to have the tightest script and story security. Other than what's been in the Morbius trailers, we don't really know what's going to happen in this movie. Yet, the first trailer showed a new love between Marvel and Sony. Michael Keaton's Adrian Toomes AKA the Vulture appears in the trailer, in his prison outfit from Spider-Man: Homecoming and seems to know Jared Leto's Michael Morbius. Also, over two years ago, fans took set photos showing Spider-Man set dressing on the Morbius shoot. The design is very reminiscent of the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films, but now I think the Amazing Andrew Garfield will be the Spidey in the Morbius movie.

In No Way Home, when Peter 3 (Andrew Garfield) meets Peter 1 (Tom Holland), he tells us what happened after the end of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Suffering after the death of Gwen Stacy, this version of Spider-Man "stopped pulling my punches." The set dressing suggests that the wall-crawler is wanted and a murderer. This seems to match more with the description of how the Amazing Spider-Man universe unfolded than the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man.

Also strengthening this idea is that Spider-Man seems to be missing. While the multiversal events of Spider-Man: No Way Home unfold over just a few days, it's all made up sci-fi magic. It's possible that Spider-Man's absence here is related to No Way Home (and this movie was supposed to come out before the third MCU Spidey). They could make it so that while it was just a few days for Garfield's Spidey, he was gone for an extended time. I suspect the post-credits scene of Morbius will show Andrew Garfield returning as a newly invigorated Amazing Spider-Man.

We know that Sony Pictures is stepping up its Spider-Verse with a Kraven the Hunter movie, Across the Spider-Verse Part 1, and other projects tied to the Marvel characters they own. It seems like Tom Holland will stay in the MCU for now, but the response to the return of the old Spideys means Sony has their own live-action web-head to play with. Garfield seems to go to the Paul Rudd health spa, as he hasn't really aged in 10 years. He's the perfect choice to play Sony's Spidey, especially since it sounded like the Tobey Maguire version found a happy ending being Spider-Man and living with MJ.

Sony may have also learned a lesson from their time with Marvel Studios. If this is the Amazing Spider-Man universe, it's possible that all these characters will form a Sinister Six of their own to take him down. Lastly, with Tom Hardy's Venom hopping the multiverse, it makes sense he could end up in this universe (especially since Morbius mentions Venom in a trailer). Whatever happens, Sony is (hopefully) going to focus on these characters first, introducing the Spider-Man as the tease, not the other way around.

The biggest failing of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was all the set-up in the film for future villains. It confused an already complex movie and teased characters that fans wanted to see but not at the cost of the story they were watching. So, if these solo films like Venom and Morbius can lead to Andrew Garfield finally getting The Amazing Spider-Man 3, that will be some nice poetry.

If Andrew Garfield and his Amazing Spider-Man shows up in Morbius, it will likely be brief. The buildup to Amazing Spider-Man 3 may start with Morbius but it will likely carry on through many movies.

Morbius releases in theaters on April 1, 2022.

What do you think? Do you think Andrew Garfield will show up for a cameo in Morbius? Do you think Morbius and all the other Sony Marvel projects are building up to The Amazing Spider-Man 3? Let us know your thoughts, reactions, and you own theories in the comments below.

Francesco Francavilla Athlete Posters – Celebrating Black History Month To The Olympics And Beyond

Posted: 24 Feb 2022 01:11 PM PST

The Olympics come around every few years to remind us about the best of the best when it comes to sports. It's inspiring how people will push themselves in the pursuit of sport, and we're fortunate enough to sit on the sidelines (or on the couch) and watch them do it. One artist has dedicated Black History Month to creating art that highlights Black athletes who made history. The Francesco Francavilla athlete posters serve as a reminder of how many incredible Black athletes weren't just pushing the limits of their bodies and minds but also forging a way for future Black athletes to do their best.

Black Athletes Who Made History Posters By Francesco Francavilla

Francesco Francavilla is a creator and comic book artist with a unique retro-inspired style of art. In addition to co-creating series like The Black Coat and working for companies like Marvel, Francavilla takes to social media to put a spotlight on important movements and months. To celebrate Black History Month, Francavilla has been releasing digital posters that highlight Black athletes who made history at the Olympics and elsewhere. A new poster has been released each day in February 2022.

The first athlete highlighted is Jack Johnson. As shared in Francavilla's post, he was the first African-American man to hold the World Heavyweight Champion title in 1908 for boxing.

Another inspiring athlete featured in Francavilla's posters is Bonnie St. John. She is a former Paralympic skier, having had one of her legs amputated below the knee at the age of 5. Despite the challenge, St. John is known for being the first Africa-American to win medals at a paralympic event. She holds three medals (a silver and two bronze.) In addition to these inspiring feats, St. John went on to graduate from Harvard and has written six successful books.

The remaining posters feature athletes including Olympians, Athletes Of The Year winners, record-breakers, and other changemakers. Other highlighted names include Florence Griffith-Joyner, Fritz Pollard, Gabby Douglas, and Willye White.

Why These Posters Of Athletes Matter In A Month Of Black History And The Olympics

It's easy to forget just how recent many "firsts" are for Black athletes. Some of the posters feature changemakers from a century ago. Others are far more recent. For example, Olympian Gabby Douglas is featured in the Francesco Francavilla athlete posters. As explained in the caption, Douglas was the first African-American woman to win an all-around gymnastics competition at the Olympics when she was 16. This was only a decade ago, at the 2012 London Olympics. Black individuals continue to set historic “firsts” in all fields, especially sport.

Art pieces like these remind us of the beauty in sport and perseverance, while also highlighting how having people to look up to that look like you can change the world. Each athlete is not just competing for themselves, but for the younger generation watching them on television and in the news and wondering if they can be great like them. Diversity within these athletes helps even more people know that they can achieve greatness, too.

Francesco Francavilla Continues To Release Black History Month Posters Online.

Readers, what Black athletes who changed history are the most inspiring to you? Did the Francesco Francavilla athlete posters teach you anything new about Black athletes at the Olympics or elsewhere? Drop your thoughts in the comments and let us know how you're celebrating Black History Month.

Squirrel Girl Prose Novel Coming This Summer From Aconyte Books

Posted: 24 Feb 2022 08:16 AM PST

There are many characters that are super popular that are head-scratchers. Rocket and Groot, for instance. Sure, they have fun personalities and quirks, but they're still a talking raccoon and a walking tree. They fit more in Middle-Earth than the Marvel Universe. Or Hal Jordan. How can a character so bland and so dull be so damn popular? That's an article for another day. But another of those characters, Squirrel Girl, is getting her own prose novel from Aconyte Books. The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Universe by Tristan Palmgren hits physical and digital bookstores in August of 2022. And, like most stories involving this weird and wonderful Marvel Comics character, the story sounds delightful.

What Will the Squirrel Girl Prose Novel Be About?

Squirrel Girl Prose novel, Aconyte Books, Marvel Heroines, Legends of Asgard, Marvel Novels, Tristan Palmgren, Marvel Untold, Xavier's Institute, School of X, X-Men, Avengers, Shadow Protocol, Outlaw, Black Cat, Rogue

Picture this: a cosmic adventure featuring a young superheroine, a small army of bushy-tailed rodents, pirates, and space whales. That's what we're looking at in Squirrel Girl Universe. As Marvel describes in their announcement:

“Squirrel Girl is in a pickle and a jam, a metaphor that mixes about as well as it tastes. She and her friends are lost in outer space, where there is a conspicuous absence of oxygen and, even more troubling, a shortage of squirrels. After hitching a ride on a passing space whale, Squirrel Girl and her trusty companions find themselves on a free-merchant space station and on the front line of a looming interstellar war.

“The stakes have never been so high, and trillions of lives are at risk! Luckily for the universe, Squirrel Girl is here to stand up against the odds and set things right across the galaxy.”

If you read that description and thought "pass," there's a conspicuous absence where your heart should be. Then, of course, your doctor will say that you need more Squirrel Girl in your life, starting with this prose novel. But there are others from Aconyte worth reading too.

Aconyte Books is Delivering Greatness with the Marvel Prose Novels

Squirrel Girl Prose novel, Aconyte Books, Marvel Heroines, Legends of Asgard, Marvel Novels, Tristan Palmgren, Marvel Untold, Xavier's Institute, School of X, X-Men, Avengers, Shadow Protocol, Outlaw, Black Cat, Rogue

Squirrel Girl Universe is going to be the 24th prose novel from Aconyte. They started in October 2020 with Domino: Strays and The Head of Mimir, kicking off the Heroines and Legends of Asgard lines. These were fast followed by Liberty and Justice for All, an Xavier's Institute novel, and The Harrowing of Doom, the first in the Untold series. Then, in 2021, Aconyte published another 12 Marvel prose novels. They've already published two this year, and, including Squirrel Girl Universe, have six others slated until August – two of which are bringing back the Choose Your Own Adventure-style novels. But with some upgrades.

What the Aconyte Marvel books do best is highlight peripheral characters. Who would have ever thought to give Outlaw her own prose novel, or the Asgardians Heimdall and Tyr? And several minor X-Men characters, like Anole and Tempest. Even better is that the stories exist alongside the Marvel canon, so, after you read the Squirrel Girl prose novel and pick up a comic with her later, you go in knowing that she and her squirrel friends saved the universe. How great is that?

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Universe prose novel will be released by Aconyte Books on August 2nd, 2022.

In the meantime, there are plenty of great novels to catch up on, but what characters do you want to see get their own prose novel after Squirrel Girl?
