POSITIVE SELF TALK: ADD A MANTA

As many of you know, I am a huge believer in positive self-talk. I see, for myself, what a difference it makes.

The weather is warm and so I'm back on my road bike and doing a lot of riding and climbing. Just as an aside, I have no idea why I say that I like to climb hills. Whenever I am actually climbing, I hate every minute of it! (hahahaha) Years ago, whenever I started an ascent, I would look up at the top and think "UUG…….I just can't do this." This was not a helpful message to my brain. So changed what I said to myself declaring, "YOU GOT THIS!" Those words worked better and made a difference.

This year, I added something to the positive self-talk—a mantra. Now when I get to a hill, I no longer look up at the top. I keep my eyes forward, because when I do this, the road appears flatter. My mantra is: "Head down, the road is flat, you got this." I keep repeating this over and over until I get to the top and I'm telling you……it helps!

This got me thinking about how we can make challenging things in our lives a bit easier by changing the dialogue that we have with ourselves. I have clients who have shared some of their negative self-talk and I see how brutal and destructive this negatively is to the mind, body and spirit. I say, change the message! Add a mantra! See if it works. If it does, I would love to hear about it.
