A lovely, family & dog friendly pub serving homemade food, focusing on their freshly made pies, and a range of locally brewed beers and distilled gins. A "local" feel pub The Horse and Jockey also have a function room and large screens to view many sporting fixtures.
Blessed with another decent pub serving food not far from us (a short drive from the S35 area, but bear in mind there is no parking here although you should find somewhere to park on the local streets), we visited the Horse and Jockey where, since their refurb and re-opening back in Nov 2021, I had been meaning to visit. Known for their homemade pies, food is served here Wednesday - Sunday including Pie & Pint for £10 Wednesday - Friday evenings, and on Sunday you can get Pie Roasts with all the trimmings.
We killed two birds with one stone and celebrated National Pie Week AND the classic Sunday Roast with a beautiful Pie Roast. We both opted for the Chicken & Veg pie (which was actually Chicken & Bacon, but no complaints there) with all the usual roast dinner trimmings, and it was gorgeous.
What we call a proper pie (fully uncased in a pastry, not just a pastry top stew with a lid) with lovely thick pastry, was packed full of chicken and bacon served with roast potatoes and a Yorkshire pudding, on top of lots of fresh vegetables including carrot, parnsip, tenderstem broccoli and cabbage, with loooooads of gravy. What's not to love? A really filling, tasty Sunday dinner with a difference. You can also opt for standard Roast Dinners with Beef, Pork or Vegan Haggis as well.
The menu here also offers a range of hot snacks and sides, and desserts. Check out the Horse and Jockey's website here for more information.
