Item: Summer 2024, 10/15: Yin-yang fried rice, 鴛鴦炒飯
Date: July 21, 2024
Location: 皇后名粥, Toronto, Canada
Rating: ★★★★★★☆☆☆☆
The only dish with a lower rating during this trip was the yin-yang fried rice. I had been craving it for a while due to nostalgia and finally had the chance to order it after a family outing. The "yin" and "yang" represent the dark (orange-red) and bright (white) parts of the dish, respectively, with "yin" being composed of chicken in a ketchup-based sauce and "yang" being composed of shrimp in a Bechamel-like sauce. The reason why it got a less-than-satisfactory rating was because the flavours were too light and weak! Normally the red portion would appear much darker, meaning that here the sauce just wasn't saucy enough. The same could be said about the white portion, which was a bit too watery. Overall lacking in flavour and presentation, a bit of a disappointment!
